Mary J. Blige and Gina Prince-Bythewood Are Building ‘Good People’—But It Is Not Yet a Series

Universal Television is developing Natalie Baszile’s ‘Friends and Family’ with an unusually deep Black creative team. The project has a title and a director, but no buyer or series order.

Natalie Baszile’s new novel ‘Friends and Family’ is moving toward television with a creative team that makes the early development stage worth watching. Universal Television is developing the project under the title ‘Good People.’ Marissa Jo Cerar is attached to write and executive produce, Gina Prince-Bythewood would direct a potential pilot, and Mary J. Blige will executive produce through Blue Butterfly Productions.

A formidable team, but no buyer yet

The rest of the producing group is just as significant. Baszile, Reggie Rock Bythewood and Francie Calfo are attached alongside Debra Martin Chase, with Universal Television serving as the studio. The project is expected to be pitched to potential buyers. That means no network or streaming service has ordered it, no cast has been announced, and there is no production schedule or release date.

Development is not the same as a series order

That distinction is not industry fine print. A development package can attract a studio, writers, producers and a director without ever reaching a pilot or a full season. ‘Good People’ has cleared an important first hurdle because Universal secured the book rights before publication and assembled recognizable talent around it. It has not cleared the commercial decisions that turn that package into episodes viewers can watch.

The novel is about the limits of protection

The source material gives the team more than a marketable title. ‘Friends and Family,’ published October 6, follows Babs, a self-made Black interior designer, and Nora, her wealthy white friend. Their decade-long bond fractures after police confront Nora’s adopted Black son, Nathan. An affair also destabilizes the two families, but the sharper conflict concerns race, protection and the emotional work Babs has performed inside the friendship.

A police call at Baszile’s home supplied the spark

Baszile has explained that the novel grew from a 2016 incident at her own home. A neighbor called police while her daughter and friends were gathered there; nobody was hurt, but the only other Black child in the group was questioned. Baszile began with a parent’s fear and then used fiction to examine what the aftermath exposed about friendship, privilege and assumptions of safety.

The adaptation has to preserve the difference between love and safety

In an NPR interview, Baszile described a central illusion the adaptation will have to preserve: Nora believes love, openness and money can almost move her adopted son out of race and into class. Babs understands that wealth cannot shield a Black boy from every lesson the world may impose on him. The conflict is not simply between a caring mother and an uncaring one; it is between two definitions of what protection requires.

Why this particular creative team matters

The Black women behind the project bring useful experience to that material. Cerar created ‘Women of the Movement’ and worked on the literary adaptation ‘Black Cake.’ Prince-Bythewood has spent decades directing stories where Black women’s ambitions, relationships and interior lives drive the frame. Chase’s credits include ‘Harriet,’ while Blige has expanded from performance into producing through Blue Butterfly. Their résumés do not guarantee a good adaptation, but they reduce the chance that the novel’s racial argument is treated as decorative conflict.

Baszile is not arriving as a passive rights holder

Baszile’s own producer credit also matters. ‘Queen Sugar,’ her first novel, became a seven-season OWN drama created by Ava DuVernay. This time, Baszile arrives after publishing another novel, writing and co-directing the documentary ‘Harvest,’ and speaking publicly about the personal event underneath ‘Friends and Family.’ Her involvement creates an opportunity for the screen version to change form without losing the questions that made the book urgent.

The Black Angle’s view: the package is the promise, not the finished show

The Black Angle’s view: ‘Good People’ is promising because it is being built around a specific Black perspective rather than adding one after the package is sold. The next headline should come only when a buyer, pilot order or series order actually exists. Until then, the honest story is that a strong group of Black women and collaborators has assembled around a difficult novel—and now must convince a platform to let them make it.

What remains unconfirmed

No trailer or official project video exists at this stage, so none is attached. The verified announcement establishes the title, studio and creative team, while the publisher and Baszile’s interviews establish the novel’s story and real-life inspiration. Casting, episode count, buyer, production timing and release plans remain unannounced.

The project is in development at Universal Television and is expected to be pitched to buyers; it has no announced network, streamer or series order. No official trailer or project video was available at publication, so none is attached.
