Toni Morrison’s ‘The Bluest Eye’ Removed From Cobb County School Libraries
Georgia’s Cobb County School District has removed Toni Morrison’s acclaimed novel “The Bluest Eye” from its school libraries, becoming the district’s 37th book removal since 2023.
Toni Morrison’s landmark novel “The Bluest Eye” has been removed from libraries in Georgia’s Cobb County School District following a review of its content.
District officials said passages in the 1970 novel containing descriptions of sexual abuse violated standards for material available to students in grades six through 12.
“The Bluest Eye,” Morrison’s first novel, follows a young Black girl whose life is shaped by racism, poverty, abuse and damaging ideas about beauty.
The removal has renewed a long-running national debate over whether restricting books containing difficult material protects children or prevents students from accessing important literature about race and trauma.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “The Bluest Eye” became the 37th title removed from Cobb County school libraries since 2023.
Critics of the decision have described the removals as censorship, while district officials maintain that the issue is the explicit nature of certain passages rather than Morrison’s race or the book’s discussion of racism.
Other works by Morrison remain available within the school system.
Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993 and is regarded as one of the most influential American writers of the modern era.
