Beyond the algorithm: make room for the whole album.
A case for pressing play on track one—and staying for the outro.

There is a particular pleasure in hearing an album without skipping ahead to the song everyone is talking about. A quiet opening, an unexpected guest, a beat switch halfway through: the details can change when they arrive in the order an artist chose.
A playlist can introduce you to someone you would never have found on your own. But discovery and attention are different experiences. One offers a doorway; the other gives you time to explore the room.
Try giving a new record one uninterrupted listen. Then return to the song you almost overlooked. Read the credits. Pay attention to the producers, musicians, and engineers whose names rarely make a headline.
